Zisha Clay is found in five different colors...red, yellow, green, black, and purple. It has been used in pottery for over 3,000 years. The properties of the clay make it the perfect vessel for brewing tea. With use, the teapot absorbs the flavors of the tea which enhances future batches. Zisha Clay Teapot should never be washed with soap and water, just rinse with water and allow to drip dry. Read our related topic Chinese Tea Culture
Lacquer & Cinnabar Lacquer has been used in Chinese Arts since about 200 BC. Lacquer come from the sap of a Lacquer tree ( Native to Southern China ). Lacquer is an extremely tedious process. Many coats are needed to create a thickness that can be carved. As many as 100 to 150 coats may be used on some pieces to achieve the desired thickness. Each layer must dry before the next can be applied. It takes 3- 4 months to make a single piece. The most popular coloring used in Lacquer goods is called Cinnabar, which is made from mercury. The name comes from its dark red color. Most of the workshops in China that made Cinnabar items have closed. There are only a couple left in all of China.
Jade, Jadeite, and New Jade
What is jade?
'Jade', or Yu, as it is called in China, is generally classified into soft jade (nephrite) and hard jade (jadeite). Since China only had the soft jade until jadeite was imported from Burma during the Qing dynasty (1271-1368), jade traditionally refers to the soft jade so it is also called traditional jade.

Shoushan Stone
Shoushan Stone Carving Shoushan stone is a kind of alabaster quarried from a mountain called Shoushan in the northern suburbs of Fuzhou. With a soft, smooth surface and variegated colours, this stone makes an ideal material for carving. We know from the sculptured stone pigs found in an ancient tomb from the Southern Dynasties that Shoushan stone carving has been in existence for some l,500 years.
The stone carvings of the later Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) dynasties were generally Buddha statues, incense burners, rosaries and funeral figurines. During the Yuan and Ming (1271-1644), Shoushan stone also came to be used for seal carving. Later, craftsmen excelled in various carving styles and many different schools were formed. Types of Shoushan stone carving now include circular, relief, openwork hollowed out, boyi (shallow relief) and marquetry carving. Top craftsmen are able to create wonderful images by utilizing the natural contours and fine streaks of colour in the stone.
